Game 28 | Road Game 12 | AHL Game 408
Dec. 11, 2010, 7:05 pm CST | Rockford MetroCentre, Rockford, IL
Broadcast: News Radio 1000 KTOK
TONIGHT: The Barons make their first of 3 visits to the Rockford MetroCentre to take on the Icehogs, AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks. It’s the first meeting between these teams. OKC enters off a 4-2 win last night at home over the Manitoba Moose. The Barons are third in the West Division, 1 point back of Peoria and 5 behind San Antonio. Rockford is eighth in the West, but has played the fewest games in the division at 25. This short trip wraps up with tomorrow’s game at Milwaukee, OKC’s first at the Bradley Center.
RECENT TRANSACTIONS: On Wednesday, Edmonton recalled center Ryan O’Marra and winger Linus Omark from the Barons. They replaced Shawn Horcoff (knee) and Ales Hemsky (groin) on the Oilers’ active roster. The Barons recalled left winger Jesse Gimblett from ECHL Stockton and center Dave Bonk from Allen of the CHL. Bonk played last night, while Gimblett was scratched. Gimblett played 15 games for Stockton, recording 5 goals and 3 assists. Bonk, who played 1 game for the Barons Oct. 15, was signed to his second PTO (professional try-out) of the season. Bonk has 6 goals and 15 assists in 16 CHL games.
MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Former Barons Linus Omark and Ryan O’Marra each recorded assists in their Oiler season debuts last night, while Omark sealed a 4-3 Edmonton victory with a goal as the final entrant in the shootout. It was Omark’s NHL debut. At the time of his recall on Wednesday, he was OKC’s leading point scorer with 26.
PK NUMBER 1: The Barons own the AHL’s top penalty killing percentage at 89.8. In the past 4 games, the Barons have killed 28 of their last 29 times short.
LOOKING NORTH: Last night’s 4-2 win over Manitoba boosted the Barons’ record vs. North Division teams to 8-2-0-1. OKC is 4-0-0-0 at home against North clubs, downing Lake Erie twice and Manitoba and Toronto once. The Barons are 7-6-1-2 vs. the West; 3-1-0-0 on the road inside the division.
HEATING UP: Alexandre Giroux, the AHL’s leading scorer each of the past 2 seasons, brings a 3-game goal streak and 4-game point streak into tonight. Giroux recorded his third 2-goal game of the season last night. He has 4 goals in his last 3 games after going 14 without lighting the lamp. Yesterday, Giroux was named by league president David Andrews one of the playing captains for the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross, to be held Jan. 30-31 at Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. Giroux won back-to-back Calder Cups as a Hershey Bear the past 2 seasons.
REDDOX ATOP NUMEROUS CHARTS: Liam Reddox shares the club lead with Linus Omark with 13 goals. Reddox is also among the league leaders in some unusual categories. He’s scored the first goal of a game 4 times, part of large group tied for second in that category behind Springfield’s Mike Blunden, who has 5 first goals. Reddox is part of a 3-way tie for the AHL lead in unassisted goals with 3. He’s in a 4-way tie for the second-most shorthanded goals with 3.
ODDS AND ENDS: Colin McDonald has already matched his career high for goals in an AHL campaign with 12...his overall career best is 13 goals set last year, with 12 for Springfield and 1 for Edmonton...after winning their first 2 shootout, the Barons have lost 3 straight tiebreakers...in the last 2 shootouts, OKC attackers are 0-for-10, while the opposition has made 1 goal stand up for the win each time...dating to a shootout loss Nov. 19 vs. Texas, OKC has been denied in 12 straight attempts and 14 of the last 15 tries.
