Does anyone want to teach me some basics for hockey? Would it be better to learn at public skate or stick n puck? I dont have much money, but I could at least pay for the admission for ps or stick n puck which ever one they think would be better for me. I am willing to pay more if needed just let me know. I can skate alright. I have a little speed and can cross over goin right but not left. The thing that is really holdin me back is stopping. I see little tiny kids do it, so it cant be that hard I just need a little bit one on one help. Thanks

HAHA , the thing with kids is they have no fear of falling or looking like idiots , and they are a lot closer to the ground when they fall so it doesn't hurt as much. I am not a great skater but i will gladly escort you to stick and puck. Its cheaper at Blazers Ice centre bc you can buy a cheap a punch card. 10 StickandPucks / Pickups for 50 bucks. Hell I will even let you use one of my punches if you want to go.

The key is just getting out there and skating. Public skate doesnt have young kids out there playing a pick up game in the middle of the pick up. However you cant take a stick on the ice at public skate.

I could help you out as well if you would like. I know you said you have a limited budget, but the best way to improve skating is to round up some pads to use that way if you take a spill you don't wind up in the hospital. It also allows you to mentally and physically push yourself harder because there is much less fear of injury.

When you start the best thing to do is work at skating in straight lines with good form. There are several skating videos on youtube you can find that will show you proper technique.

Here is one that gets very detailed on the forward stride:

Best tips I can give you up front:

1. Keep your knees bent.
2. Your chest and head need to be up (no bending over). If you are doing it right your head WILL NOT bob up and down.
3. Make full extensions with your legs to get full power.

That is basically it. Backwards skating is literally identical, except backwards. There is a video somewhere where they take a profesional player skating backward and rewind it and you can barely tell if the video was originally shot with him going forward or backward.

Hope this helps!
