I think I heard Super Mario came out and was accusing the Islanders player of headhunting his players. I cant take this seriously when Mr Lemieux employs Matt Cooke. That guy is the dirtiest SOB on the ice.

What does having Matt Cooke on your team have to do with Trevor Gillies going at the head of Eric Tangrady, punching him while he's obviously injured, and then taunting him as he's helped of the ice. Every team has an instagator, Dallas has Steve Ott, NYI have Trevor Gillies, Pens have Matt Cooke, and the list goes on. If DiPietro keeps his a$$ in the crease, none of this nonsense takes place and he's not on the IR for 4-6 weeks. Obviously the league agreed with Lemieux since they suspended Gillies nine games and giving the NYI a $100,000 fine.

“Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn’t hockey. It was a travesty. It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that.

“The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed.

“We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action.

“If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to re-think whether I want to be a part of it.”

Gotta say I agree with Lemieux on that one. I just went back and watched Matt Martin's sucker punch on Max Talbot. Looks very much like Todd Bertuzzi on Steve Moore, just without the injury result. 4 games for Matt Martin seems kind of light considering Bertuzzi got 20. Not saying Martin deserved a full 20, but certainly more than 4 would have been deserving. Gillies should be out indefinately. Being an inforcer with a specific role to play is different than being a thug. The NHL is not the CHL. The NHL can survive without Trevor Gillies.

BTW...after reading pb's post of Lemieux's comments I don't see anything about headhunting. He just feels that the suspensions and fines should be more severe.

I was simply pointing out that cooke does his fair share of dirty things. I mean did you see his hit on Savard a while back ? I think its called Karma. I think if you employ a guy who does that dirty stuff then you have be able to swallow the pill when it happens to you as well. Cooke is a very dirty player..

While Cooke's hit on Savard cannot be defended, the B's got their retribution in the next game and it was done. No comment from Lemieux. Lemieux knew Cooke had it coming from the B's and kept his mouth shut. That said, I have watched the Pens for a long time and have never seen Matt Cooke jump on an injured player and start punching him and then taunt him as he is helped from the ice. What happened with the Ile's goes to the fact that they were pissed because Brent Johnson broke DiPietro's face. If your idiot goalie is going to willingly engage in a fight and gets his face broke you have to, as you say, "be able to swallow the pill." What Matt Martin did, grabing an unsuspecting player and punching him from behind and then engaging a goalie as a player, is just something that is simply not done. Goes back to that whole "hockey players have their own code" thing. Players engage players (face to face), and goalies engage goalies. The NHL is not consistent at times with their suspensions. Bertuzzi got 20 games for a similar play and Martin only gets 4. While the result was different, the play was the same. And so the suspension should be similar as well.

Kinda with you JtheGoalie. But did Martin's punch actually connect? That's the only thing I am looking at. I mean yes - the intent was there for a bad sucker punch... but if he doesn't connect can you really punish him for that? If Gillies goes headhunting on that hit and misses does he still get suspended?

Not defending the Isles ... Gilles is a damn plug who should be in the CHL.

I might watch the video again. I don't think Martin's punch caught him.

Ya well, most of what Don Cherry says is driven more by what will get him noticed than anything. I don't put a lot of stock into anything he says.
